The Benefits of Exercise:

Physical fitness from moving the body does amazingly good things for health.
  • improves cardiovascular health
  • improves balance
  • improves mental sharpness
  • improved mood
  • ....BUT....
BUT, There is one thing exercise does not do.
  • lose body fat

When I open the weight conversation with my patients, almost every patient responds like this: "I'd be thinner if I exercised more."  My response...WRONG. Stop blaming yourself. You aren't lazy or too injured to lose weight.  It's not that I want to discourage people from exercising, it's just that exercise is not the right tool for weight loss. The American College of Sports Medicine even acknowledges this and you'd think they'd say it if were true. Very physically active people fail to lose weight if they don't cut the carbs. Check out Dr. Peter Attia in the photo to the left.
He had just completed a 9-mile open water swim. This feat required a massive amount of training yet he still had a gut and was very nearly diabetic at the time. WHY? He was eating the way sports nutritionists told him to--- carb load.
Sami Inkenin- Became a billionaire by founding an internet company called Trulia. He also is a serious triathelite, but by his mid-thirties he was diagnosed with prediabetes. He believed that he needed to consume a constant stream of sugars and starched to remained fuel for his endurance sports.  His research into how prediabetes could have happened to him lead Sami to the ketogenic diet and then to found Virta Health, a company whose mission it is to reverse diabetes in 100 million people.
