What? Eat a steak for heart health? Red meat has been blamed for cardiovascular disease for so long. Most people are too young to remember a time when red meat wasn't considered a health threat. Yet over the years many scientific papers have failed to find actual evidence to support red meat's deadly reputation. There is now a thriving community of people who call themselves Carnivores,. Could they really be healthy eating only meat? Many of them say so.
The article linked below is written by a cardiologist friend of mine and was published in the Houston chronicle. He lays out the case in favor of red meat. The main points are that red meat was vilified because of its saturated fat content. The link between saturated fat and heart disease has never been proven. Several major trials that were designed to test the hypothesis that diets high in saturated fats cause disease have actually failed to do so. Nonetheless it is still shunned by mainstream dietary guidelines. Read on to find out how this came to be. www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/outlook/article/Want-a-healthier-heart-Eat-a-steak-Opinion-13239443.php
