It was recently discovered the popular and relatively new diabetes drug Invokana doubles the risk of leg and leg amputations in people who use it. OOPS. It's been on the market for a couple years now yet we are only now learning about this. The FDA is now requiring the drug label disclose this serious side effect in a Black Box.
This is a potent reminder and cautionary tale regarding medications and especially new medications: That we don't know what the long term side effects may be until they have been on the market for a long time, years or decades. It is the reason why I generally resist prescribing new drugs. I let other doctors experiment on their patients first. Drugs that have been on the market for decades (insulin) or centuries (digoxin) have recently been discovered to cause harm or death. Invokana forces the kidneys to pee away excess glucose. There is a better way to lower glucose however. That is to not consume it in the first place. Shocking right? Yes, eating fat and protein (like in eggs or steak) does not raise glucose hardly at all; is very filling and is excellent nutrition. No meds required. If you don't eat glucose molecules then you won't have to spend money on a med that causes you to dump the glucose literally into the toilet. It also won't cost an arm and a leg.
